We are a London consultancy specialising in Italian citizenship and in sworn and certified translation. The practice is led by Michela de Julio, a legal consultant and an official translator sworn before the Court of Rome and the Italian Consulate General in London, with many years spent on the documents that pass between Italy and the rest of the world.

Michela de Julio

Michela de Julio graduated in Law and in Modern Languages and holds a master’s degree in immigration law. Registered as an official translator with the Court of Rome since 1995 under the original register number 15556, a registration also held in the national register of court-appointed experts under number 1404, updated on 27 February 2024, she is an expert translator of the Chamber of Commerce of Rome under number 2183 and a translator of the Consulate General of Italy in London, a Qualified Member of the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (MITI 17176), a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (MCIL 53318) and a Qualified Member of the International Federation of Translators. A journalist registered with the Order of Journalists of Lazio since 2002, she writes on Italian citizenship law for Italians abroad and for the descendants of emigrants, and her articles have accompanied the reform of 2025 and the ensuing decisions of the courts from the day of their publication.

She collaborates with several law firms in Italy on the conduct of citizenship files and the study of complex cases, and where the records of an ancestor are missing she undertakes the research in person, in the Italian State Archives, in the comuni and at The National Archives in Kew. She lives in London, where MMW Europe Ltd has its office, travels to Rome to swear her translations before the court, and works in Italian, English, French and Spanish.

What we do

Our first task is to establish, in writing, whether a route to Italian citizenship is open to a given person and which one, under the law in force on the day of the opinion. Our clients come from every part of the world and live in the United Kingdom, in Italy or in a third country, and each file is prepared for the particular office which will examine it, whether a consulate, a comune or a Prefecture. We obtain the Italian certificates from the comuni and the archives, arrange for the foreign certificates to be issued in the version accepted by the Italian authorities, complete with the apostille or the consular legalisation of the country of origin, and translate them in the form each office prescribes. Once lodged, the file is followed until the comune confirms the registration. We also enrol our clients in the AIRE, obtain the codice fiscale, the SPID and the PEC, and keep their civil status records in order at every change of circumstances, transcribing births, marriages, divorces and civil partnerships. The same care is given to the spouses of Italian citizens, to former citizens who reacquire their citizenship, to parents who declare on behalf of their children and to descendants who move to Italy to complete the two years of residence.

The documents decide the file

For more than thirty years we have translated and prepared documents for Italian citizenship, for visas, for the recognition of qualifications and for every other immigration procedure, from every country and in every language, together with a team of official translators of long standing. This experience accounts for the attention the site devotes to documents. In nine files out of ten the decisive question is not the law but the collection, the preparation and the translation of the papers, and this is precisely where applications founder: a certificate requested in the wrong version, a surname spelt three ways across three generations, a date at variance from one record to the next, a legalisation omitted or obtained from the wrong authority, a translation entrusted to someone unfamiliar with what the receiving office reads. Each of these errors costs months, and before a consulate with a waiting list it costs years. We know the practice of each office and prepare every document accordingly before the file is lodged. The page on common problems with documents describes the errors we encounter most often.

What we do not do

We are a private consultancy and not a law firm. Our work is administrative in nature: we carry out no reserved legal activity within the meaning of the Legal Services Act 2007, we are not regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and we give no advice on British immigration law, a field regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority. We do not appear in court. Where a case admits of no solution other than a judicial one, as with the maternal lines before 1948 or with a refusal the authority declines to withdraw, the written assessment says so from the outset and the family is introduced to one of the lawyers with whom we work in partnership, specialists in citizenship law who conduct the proceedings before the Italian courts, while we continue to attend to the documents, the research and the translations.

We promise no outcome. The law of 2025 closed routes which had remained open for a century, and part of our work consists in explaining to families, in writing and with reasons, why no route is open to them today. We sell no certificates, we retain no document longer than the file requires, and we accept no instruction for a file we would not lodge ourselves.

How we work

Everything begins with the written assessment: the family line, the dates and the documents already in the family’s possession, in return for an opinion naming the route, the documents, the competent office and the time the procedure requires. We correspond in English or in Italian, by email, and meet in London by appointment.
