Italian citizenship law today
Italian citizenship law changed more between March 2025 and July 2026 than in the thirty years before. A decree-law, its conversion with amendments, two budget laws, a law on the consular procedure, a judgment and an order of the Constitutional Court, a judgment of the United Sections of the Court of Cassation and a referral to the Court of Justice of the European Union have followed one another in sixteen months. This section keeps the account of those changes in one place, dated and sourced, and answers the questions they raise for families in the United Kingdom.
How to read this section
The first page is a chronology: what each law and each decision changed, and from which date. The second explains the decisions of the courts in 2025 and 2026, including the question now pending in Luxembourg, and what they mean for an application lodged today. The third collects the problems with documents which stop files in the consulates and the comuni, with the remedy for each. The fourth answers the questions we are asked most. Every page carries the date of its last review, and the pages are revised when the law or the practice changes.
