Medical treatment, religion and other visas
The decree of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of 2011 lists the visas which Italy issues, and beyond the visas for work, family, study, elective residence and investment a number of others cover specific situations, each with its own documents and its own permit. This page sets out the ones which the families and the professionals who write to us meet most often.
Medical treatment
Article 36 of the consolidated act admits a foreigner who comes to Italy for a treatment, with a visa valid for its expected duration and renewable. The file contains the declaration of the Italian hospital on the treatment, its date and its cost, the deposit of at least thirty per cent of the cost paid to the hospital, the proof of the means for the balance and for the stay, and the medical records of the country of residence, and a private clinic must be authorised by the national health service. A person who accompanies the patient obtains a visa of the same length on the proof of his own means.
Religion, re-entry, adoption and sport
A minister of religion enters on the visa for religious reasons with the attestation of the religious body recognised in Italy and the proof of the means, and obtains a permit which is not converted into work. A foreigner who holds a permit and finds himself abroad without it, or with a permit expired for less than sixty days, obtains at the consulate a re-entry visa on the proof of the permit. A couple who adopt a foreign child enter with the visa for adoption on the authorisation of the Italian commission for international adoptions. A professional sportsperson enters outside the quotas under article 27 on the declaration of the national sports body and of the federation, within the number which the body fixes each year.
Research, volunteering and the working holidays
A researcher enters under article 27-ter on the hosting agreement with an accredited institute and obtains a permit of its length. A volunteer enters on the agreement with the body of the programme, for at most a year. The working holiday visa, for young people who travel and work for a year, exists under the agreements of Italy with Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, with at most six months of work in the year and three with the same employer, six in the agreements with Japan and Korea. There is no such agreement with the United Kingdom, and a British citizen between eighteen and thirty who wishes to work in Italy for a year follows the ordinary routes of this section.
A patient from Lagos accepted for a treatment at a hospital in Milan obtains the visa with the declaration of the hospital, the deposit of thirty per cent and the proof of the balance, and his wife accompanies him with a visa of the same length on the proof of her means. The permit for medical treatment is requested in Milan within eight working days and renewed with the treatment.
If your situation is one of these, send us the documents which the Italian body has given you and your own. We tell you which visa applies, what the consulate will ask for, and we prepare the translations and the legalisations.
